A.    DESCRIPTION

This course is an introductory Art course and involves the exploration of, techniques focused on composition and design, as well as individual seeing and creativity. The student will be involved in the hands on creation of Art using different techniques and media.  This course allows the student to grow and improve his creativity, observational and artistic skills, and the ability to communicate ideas and feeling through a visual media. Passing Studio Art is necessary if the student would like to take other classes offered by the Art Department. In addition Studio Art fulfills the Fine Arts requirement for graduation.

 

B.    ORGANIZATION

 This is an Art lab course in which the instructor will explain and demonstrate  

techniques that will help the student achieve the goal(s) of each assignment.  The student will be given the opportunity to show their skill using the techniques and to show their ability to achieve the assignmentıs goal(s) in a creative and powerful way. The student will be expected to created their own goals for free projects giving them the opportunity to show what they have learned and the skills they have developed. Each day the students will have the opportunity to explore their likes and dislikes relating to the experience of Art and life. The student will develop the ability to separate personal value judgments from the judgment of a work of Art based on the ability of the artist to express something in a strong, meaningful, and effective way.

 

C.    COURSE OBJECTIVES

1.   To introduce the students to the basic design and composition techniques used to create a work of Art.

2.   To show students the visual language used to communicate meaning in Art.

3.   To help the student to improve their ability to be creative.

4.   To expand the studentıs vision of the world.

5.   To allow the students to become aware of things that are meaningful to them.

6.   To provide students with opportunities to develop their Artistic, observational, and creative skills.

7.   To expose students to a variety of media.

8.   To improve the studentıs ability to assess, evaluate and respond to a work of art.

 

D.    COURSE TOPICS

The course will cover the following topics.

1.   What is Art?

2.   How do we look at Art?

3.   What is creativity?

4.   How can we be creative?

5.   Elements of Art

6.   Principles of Design

7.   2-D media ­ Drawing, Painting, Photography, Computer Art, Mixed Media.

8.   3-D media ­ Sculpture, Relief Sculpture, Conceptual Art, Environmental Art.

9.   Careers in Art. 

 

E.     TEXT AND REQUIRED SUPPLIES

      1. 4 Glue sticks.
      2. One Spiral Notebook
      3. Two - Lg. (Min Gal) Zip lock Bags
      4. Two - Small Qt. Zip Lock Bags
      5. Bring in a Cola type can (Clean and empty) by NEXT CLASS.  
      6. Ruler
      7. The best pens for this class are the Pigma Micron 01 pens with black ink. For filling in larger areas the Micron 05 or the Micron 1. These pens can be found at Michaels and other stores that carry Art Supplies. These pens work best for the kinds of things we will be doing in this class. If for whatever reason you do not or can not get the Micron pens you may use any of the following - .05mm Fine tipped Roller Ball or Gel pens - Black (NOT PERMENENT) and a thinker marker for larger areas and lines.
      8. A Set of Drawing pencils inclucing H pencils and B pencils.
        1. As an alternative you may purchase
          1. 2 - #1 Pencils or better two 2B or softer Drawing Pencils
      9. 1 Ebony pencil
      10. 1 2H Pencil
      11. 1 Pink Pearl Eraser
      12. 1 White Vinyl Eraser
      13. 1 Small Kneaded eraser
      14. 1 Pencil sharpener with a snap on shavings case.
      15. Set of Colored Markers or Set of colored Pencils - Set of 10 pencils from DollarTree is good.
      16. Thick black marker - NOT PERMENENT (Same color as fine tip marker above)
      17. Picture of yourself for the cover of your book.
      18. Something to keep your pencils, pens, markers etc. You may use one of your large plastic bags if it all fits

 

F.     GRADING SYSTEM

     Each assignment will be graded on the following:

  1. Each project will be given a point value. Most of the projects will be worth 100 points.
    1. 70% of your grade will be for:
      1. The amount of work you do from the time the project is given until the day it is due.
      2. If you finish before the due date you must either work on a personal project or redo the assignment using different choices
      3. Your willingness to clean-up
    2. 10% of your grade will be for:
      1. If you achieve the goal(s) of the assignment.
    3. 10% of your grade will be for:
      1. The quality and
      2. How many creative choices you make - does your work stand out from the rest?
    4. 10% of your grade will be for:
      1. The visual impact of the work
      2. How well the project works.
  2. At the end of the interim and at the end of the grading period the points will be added up and a grade will be given based on the district guidelines of A = 90%, B=80%, C=70%, D=60%, F=50% and below.
  3. Personal improvement – No matter how good or bad you are you can always improve by involving yourself in your work. Are you just doing work at the same level all the time or are you improving your abilities? This can only add to your grade.

All assignment grades will be added and the total points will be plugged into the district grading guidelines of 100-90 = A, 89-80 = B, 79-70 = C, 69-60 = D, 59 and below = F and a grade will be given.

 

G.  CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT The purpose of all classes is to give the student the opportunity to learn and grow both as a creative and a thinking human being.  Learning takes place best in an environment of mutual respect.  The following rules have been created to remind everyone of what it takes to maintain mutual respect.

1.   No Internet surfing during class. Computers are only to be used for class work. Students caught game playing will be given a detention and book work.

2.   Computers should only be turned on during work time and then only for assignments that REQUIRE the use of a computer.

Be prepared for class!   All students will be expected to bring the appropriate materials to class including notebooks.  Do NOT expect to go to your locker after class starts to get supplies or work.

3.   Be on time for the class.  On time means you are in the room when the bell rings.

4.   You will be expected to do   assignments in class EVERY DAY.  NO HOMEWORK FOR OTHER CLASSES SHALL BE DONE IN THIS CLASS.  The consequences for not doing Artwork in class will be a detention.

5.   There will be assigned seats and each student is expected to be sitting in his or her seat.  There will be no changing seats during class time.

6.   NO ONE IS ALLOWED OUTSIDE OF CLASS WITHOUT PERMISSION AND A PASS!!!!  THIS INCLUDES THE RESTROOM.

7.   Students are expected to come into the room and begin their observation for the day. When the bell rings all students should have their journal out and ready to do the daily observation. 

8.   All students will be expected to clean up their own area and, do clean-up chores as a clean-up monitor.

9.   Do NOT hand in any work that is not yours. If you did not do it - donıt hand it in.  You must do all your own work. If you hand in someone elseıs work, you will be given a 0 and have 20 points taken off your point total.

10.             Students will respect:

 

A.    All equipment (NO large equipment will be touched without the consent of the instructor.)

B.    Other things and Artwork. NO STEALING OR DEFACING OF PRPERTY WILL BE TOLERATED!

C.    All students and instructors.

 

A referral will be given for any of the above infractions.

 

11.             All students will sign in and out of class except when entering or leaving at the normal times.

12.             After cleaning up, all students will return to their seats until the bell rings. DO NOT STAND BY THE DOOR.

13.             All rules and regulations in the student handbook apply and will be enforced by the instructor.

14.             There will be no use of the computers unless the instructor gives permission.

15.             Students are not to be in the back room without permission.

 

 

IF A STUDENT CHOOSES TO BREAK A RULE

         1st consequence:         Verbal warning or referral depending on the rule.

         2nd consequence:        Detention.

         3rd consequence:         Detention and parent call.

         4th consequence:         Discipline referral to office and request for parent       conference.

 

H.  EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

16.           In case of a fire alarm students should proceed to the grass area next to the tennis courts. In the event the student is outside completing an assignment when the fire alarm rings, the student should proceed to the grass area next to the tennis courts.

17.             In case of a lock down or tornado, students should stay in the classroom away from the doors and windows and wait for the all clear.
